Attractions and Activities around Foxton

With an enviable location just 400m off SH 1 in Foxton, the Celtic Motel offers the benefits of being close to the town centre, yet still giving a hint of country. This is the perfect base for visiting friendly Foxton and exploring the lower west coast of the North Island, including the mighty Horowhenua and the stunning Kapiti Coast regions. It is also an ideal Interisland Ferry stopover.

Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom

Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom, our cultural tourism and community facility, offers you museums and exhibitions dedicated to the stories of Te Awahou-Foxton and the people who have connections here. It's also home to our community library.

'De Molen' Dutch Windmill

At the south end of Main Street in Foxton is a full-size working 17th century Dutch windmill. The windmill is also the local information centre. Open 7 days a week, admission to the ground floor is free and tours are also available. The shop has stoneground flours, souvenirs and imported Dutch foodstuffs.

Flax Stripper Museum

The only working flax stripping museum in the world, this is an excellent opportunity to look at the processes and products that were a vital part of Foxton's development. Located at the south end of Main Street behind the Dutch Windmill.

Whare Manaaki Maori Workshop

In a building behind the Dutch Windmill, located at the south end of Main Street, Whare Manaaki is a studio and gallery promoting local Maori history and art. As well as displays of traditional and contemporary art, there are demonstrations of weaving and carving. Open weekends 10am-3pm.

Horse-Drawn Tram

Located at the Dutch Oven on Main Street near the Dutch Windmill, scenic and educational trips are offered through the historic streets of Foxton. The tram usually operates on Sundays, but can be booked for groups by arrangement.

Audio Visual Museum

At the northern end of Main Street, this museum houses an extensive collection of audio and visual equipment. The museum is usually open weekend afternoons and may also be booked for private tours.

Shannon

Mangahao White Water Park is a world class venue and a great place to watch kayakers rodeo kayaking or 'hot dogging' during competitions. The area, located below the Mangahao Power Station at Shannon, has been transformed into a community based nature reserve with a world class kayaking facility.

Active Attractions

Off The Loop

Off The Loop has created the latest ‘must do’ attraction in the Lower North Island! They offer Cable Wakeboard and Waterski riding at their private lake on their 2 x two tower Topline Cable Systems. Based in Foxton, they have a variety of flat glassy water, ramps and rail slides at their double-laned, purpose built location nestled in the Horowhenua countryside. Something for the whole family and guaranteed to satisfy riders of all skill levels!

Foxton Pools

The Foxton Pools opened in December 2007 and have become the centre for many aquatic and fitness activities. Learn to swim, aqua fitness, canoe polo, water polo and swim club are just a few programmes which are offered to the public through out the summer months.

Foxton Golf Course

Guests are welcome on this 18-hole golf course on SH 1, just 1.5km north of Foxton. The course is a par 72 layout for men (5860 yards) and par 73 (5075 yards) for the ladies.

Foxton Beach Pump Track

The local council has provided Foxton beach with a pump track facility that offers track circuits for all ages and abilities. This includes a track for children aged two to four years and loops for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders. The design allows people to progress from the easy loop to the more difficult ones as they develop their skills, and the asphalt surface accommodates skateboarders and scooters, as well as bikes.

Manawatu River Estuary

Take some time to visit Foxton Beach, just 8km from the motel, for swimming, boating and fishing. Walk along the beach to where the Manawatu River meets the Tasman Sea. This estuary is a wetland area of international importance (with RAMSAR status) where many different bird species can be found, including godwits, wrybills and spoonbills.

De Molen (The Dutch Windmill), operated by the Foxton Windmill Trust, would like to announce The Dutch Oven bakery and café situated right next to the windmill in Main Street Foxton.
